Investec has appointed Chris Babington and Michael Smith to its corporate debt origination team, which sits in the bank’s capital markets division. Both join from Lloyds Banking and will report to Eden Riche, Investec’s head of corporate debt origination.
Babington spent three years at Lloyds in the debt capital markets team as a managing director responsible for building its financial institutions business. During his time there he led a number of funding, capital and liability management transactions for both clients and the bank itself – including the issuance of contingent capital (cocos) as part of Lloyds’ recapitalisation. Prior to Lloyds, Babington was head of debt capital markets origination, northern Europe banks at JP Morgan Cazenove. Before that he held senior DCM roles at Deutsche Bank and BNP Paribas.
Smith joins Investec from Lloyds’ specialist finance business, having originally joined Bank of Scotland in 2004 to set up its high yield business, covering origination, sales, trading and research. Previously, he spent two years at Dresdner Kleinwort as vice president of its high yield origination business and two years at JP Morgan as a high yield telecom analyst.
